These will need to be done by Saturday. I'm think I'm in there. The other goal was to try and match up the picture in the codex.

Up next in the family is my Trygon. A couple of posts ago I showed off the green stuff and sanding that I did and now he's 90% done with painting. .

Here you can see the single row of spines down the back.

The Hive Tyrant and the Old One Eye are actually on loan from Thomas so they will have to leave the new home once I have the Carnifex that's still in it's box built as well as the Hive Tyrant that I think I'm going to order from Forge World. I really like the alien look and the GW Tyrant just doesn't do it for me. Here is a shot of the Hive Tyrant.

I like to have the Venom Cannon for the extra strength in shooting as I walk across the table. When/If I get the Forge World Tyrant it should be about the same as this one, only a little bigger.

When I started out I knew I wanted to make the weapons a contrast color to the rest of the model. I liked the idea when i saw it in the new codex. There is something nice in seeing that there are actually two different organisms here. This was the reason I went for the orange weapons. Then when I got to the Zoanthropes I realized that they don't have a gun. So the Hive Mind improvised. The Zoanthropes weapon is it's mind so here you go.

I guess we can't call it "gray matter" any more. When I was redoing these I didn't like how top heavy they were. So for the deck base I went with a "floating up out of the void" type of look. I think it looks ok. It lowers the center of gravity and makes them less wobbly.

For my Work in Progress shots I have been working on the Tyranid Prime as well as the Deathleaper. Here they are in their current state.

Becasue of the Ravener chest that I used the Deathspitter arms wouldn't come together the normal way. This worked out since I wanted it to look like a grown up Warrior any way. I think the linked deathspitter gives the Prime a little of a Tyrant feel, as it should. Here is a picture of the back, to see the control panel.

The last pictures for today are of my Lictor/Deathleaper. I like the picture in the codex for this model as well but I never liked the way they positioned the arms for it. Here is my version.

His base was a little difficult at first. I was on a posting spree last month and then went a little quiet. I have been buckling down to get the Golden throne done. I did get in good games of Planetstrike on last Friday and the Friday before that. Thomas and I bumped the point total up to 1750 and each took a turn as the attacker. I don't know if he needs a new Necron codex or I'm getting better with Tyranids but I won both games. I'm pretty sure it's a new Necron codex though.

I tried the Doom of Malan'Tai in both games and it was hit and miss. In the first game I was defending and the Doom really did a number on Tom's force. Then in the second game where I was the attacker the Doom was sniped by a monolith blast. Taking a battle cannon hit to the face really hindered the things that the Doom was going to do that game, and can we really call tha sniping? I'm still out on this one though. The Elite slots in the army list are very competitive and I'm split now between the Doom and the Leaper. More games and time will tell. The Doom has such an obvious effect compared to the Deathleaper that it's hard to see why you wouldn't take the Doom. Oh well.

As far as planetstrike is concerned I know what stratagem I'll be taking as the attacker from now on. The Phase Generator that attacks the unit in the building was devastating. I rolled an 11 and wiped out an entire unit of warriors with a Trygon that deep struck on turn one. We figured that if it had gone slightly different that I could have phased him before his turn. It was pretty sick. In the end I phased him on turn Three. He took the Force Pylons and with no grenades on most of the Tyranid units I was severely hampered in my movement.

I'm hoping to have some pictures tomorrow of the current force. Not that it matters, I’m the only one that reads this thing anywho.

So here is my teaser. My goal is to get close to the look of a ravener.

From a couple of posts ago I had the bright idea of how to get my third row of stacks on my Tervigon and how I could make my Trygon look a bit more unique and here we go.

In taking the smaller inside pieces I glued them together and placed them on the center of the back of the Trygon. Then using my vastly inferior Green Stuff skills I tried to make them blend in to the carapace. I then added to the rest of the armor to even out the gaps. The hope is that it will look ok once it’s painted.

After hacking off the other stacks I glued them together and put them on the Tervigon’s back.

After using all the Green Stuff I needed to get the stacks in place I had some left over, so to break up a little more I added to the stacks to make them a little more Forgeworld-esk.

Until Next time.

Tim.

I'm no Picasso

But hopefully this is better than finger paints. I sat down this morning and decided to try and get the warriors I started done. They are basically the test figures for the army and I wanted to see how the washes and different techniques looked when done with my hands, instead of someone on the internet.

Here they are in all their glory.

I'm thinking that the paint scheme will be easily reproducible and capable of being applied in batch scale. There are differences in the two warriors and that was somewhat intentional. I want to have a little differentiation among the units. When I was painting the warrior with the feathering on the back it was only really a test. I had planned to touch up the plates with another coat of black but once I'd finished I liked the way it looked and kept it. I'll likely do a few in each unit that way to break up the mass of blue and purple. Here is a shot of the scheme on the head crest.

If you can't tell I'm really big on the washes. When they first came out I thought they were better than sliced bread. I never have liked painting. I get board really quickly and frustrated when something begins to take too long. I've found that at some point I need to just start calling it quits or I could spend weeks on details for a model. I really hit this when I painted up the Falcon for my Eldar army. It was like it was never going to end. Batch painting is one thing. You can see the goal in the end. Details can just kill me. I've had to tell myself that at a certain point it's done and there won't be perfection. I'm just not that good of a painter yet. Couple this with the timeline that I'm trying to finish in and the washes are a god send.

This should be the first steps to a completed force org chart and a free battle box.

Until Next time.

Tim.

Stroke of genius

In my last post I talked about the Tervigon and how I'm trying to get it to look like the picture in the codex. I've been thinking and thinking about how to get the Tervigon done and I think my hobbyist ADD finally paid off.

I was sitting at my work desk this morning and looking at the two mostly painted warriors that I'm testing paint schemes on, the three Raveners that need bases made for them, the Tervigon, and the box with the Trygon in it. So instead of finishing anything I broke open the Trygon and started putting it together.

About a quarter the way through the clip, clean, scrape, glue process I'm looking at the little half stack pieces and think that they would be perfect glued together and put on the back of the Tervigon. That would be the third row that I desperately need. Switching between the Trygon's back and the Tervigon's back I figure I'd just go look at Ebay to find the Trygon bits I need. While pondering how I'm going to explain why I need to spend more money to my wife, it hits me. I'm looking right at the back of one of the Raveners. A Trygon is just a big Ravener. Quickly jumping on the thought I start looking at a dry fit of the pieces and how it would work and I'm off to the garage for the rotary tool (much faster than a handsaw). Thanks to habit of not finishing the whole model in one go I was able to find the peices that I need/want for a project. "Go team procrastination"

I was wanting to do up the Trygon special so that it didn't look like every other one out there. When I first started planning it out I was going to have it bursting out of a deckplate base. Then I saw one doing that and realized, that look wasn't for me. The one I've seen looks really good and it fits the theme of the creators army very well. It just didn't look like what I had pictured in my head.

After putting together the Raveners that I picked up for Golden Throne I'm liking this new idea. It will make my Trygon just a little bit different than everyone else's and still close enough to the original. I've decided to take out the last section of the tail before the tip, as well as move the main tail part out so it doesn't cross over the front of the body. I think it will look pretty good in the end. At least I hope so.

I'll have the pictures up when I get a little further along. I know, I know, promises, promises.

Until next time.

Tim.

Credit

Giving credit where it's due. I've been spending the last few days head down on getting the models together for the Golden Throne prize. I do want to take a moment to say that I've picked up a couple of things to make this process a little faster or a little better for myself and mention those that I saw using them.
The first thing is a tool that I saw Les over at Awesomepaintjob using. It was in the intro to advanced techniques at the 6:35 mark and it is the Seam Scraper from Micro-Mark. This tool is really handy and I feel it is a much better design for getting rid of mold lines than using a hobby knife. That and the sound of a razor blade scraping on plastic was driving my wife nuts. The shipping from Micro-Mark is a tad high and since it was the same for any order under $50, I also bought a better set of clippers. The new clippers are the angled head kind with a small clip surface to get better cuts off of a sprue than my older clippers. I'm really liking these as well as the seam scraper. So except for the cost of shipping Micro-Mark has done me well and thank you to Les for showing me a new tool.

The second thing that I want to point out is a conversion that I saw another Tyranid player do for a Tervigon, over on Warpshadow. I have been kicking around ideas on how I'm going to get this model done and when I saw David's, I knew that was the route I was going to take. I followed the conversion almost exactly the same except for some minor differences. I chose to use one of the three spout infestation markers on one side and one of the two spout on the other. Sanding them down with a rotary tool to get them as flush as possible. I also am not fond of the scything talons being off of the base, so I've taken the medium sized talons from the Trygon kit and the smaller set from the Carnifex kit in an effort to keep them on the base. I have added a couple of the spikes from the Trygon to the head as well to get the face more like the one in the codex. I want to get the Tervigon as close to the one in the book as I can and there is one detail that is missing in my WIP that I really want to get there, and that is the third row of Stacks. I'm not totally sure how I'm going to do it but I'll figure something out. Once I have some good pictures of it I'll be sure to put them up here.

In the end I just wanted to take the time today to thank those that have changed the ways I do things in my own projects.

Until next time.

Tim.

Bases again

The three that I had primed have been gone over and I think they're done for now. I don't want to get to fancy with these since I need to get moving on the rest of the bases and models. Here is the picture of the three now.

I had a question about what color to make the pipe, I was thinking that I would paint it an orange to keep them in line with the colors I'm using on th models. The problem is that I don't want to distract from the models too much. I think that if the colors on the base are too bright they might do just that. I finally decided to keep to something a little closer to the colors on the base. I think the green looks pretty good. It blends well with the gray on the base. I want to keep the space hulk theme so when I was looking around the web for how to do it I found plenty of resin bases that I could buy. I know that I'm going to need a buch of bases and even at a buck a base it would be pretty expensive, so I'm building my own.
I used a great tutorial from Tim over at Vanus Temple as inspiration for design and colors. I'll be posting them as I get them done. Just one of those things you know, but it's just a word. With that in mind I had to kill an hour and a half or so while my youngest was at ballet rehearsal, so I swung by the Tukwila GW to see what was going on. Figured that I would pick up my Feb. White Dwarf while I was there. I'm not a fantasy player so this month is kind of Meh for me, oh well. I had forgotten about the Tyranid eat the store event so I was met with plenty of people putting Nids on the tables. Pretty cool to see what people would bring to an Apoc game.

Then Chelsea asks if I'd like to get into a new painting thing that they are running. The goal is to make people paint up their army.

I think to myself, yea sure.

Then she tells me that for every FoC slot that I paint I'll be entered into a raffle for the super paint set.

Yup sounds familiar.

Then she says that I bring in each unit from the FoC and after I paint up all 17 I'll get a free battle force.

Whoa! Wait a sec, not a RAFFLE for a battle force but just a free one? Now I'm motivated.

They are calling it the Golden Throne, and the limit is all 17 FoC slots. If I only get 13 done I get a $55 box, 10 painted and it's a $35 box, 7 is a $20 blister, and finally 3 painted is a $10 blister. Of course there is a catch, it all has to be done by March 15th. I'm pretty skeptical at this point, so I ask what the limitations are. She tells me that it just has to meet a Force Organization slot requirement in my codex and that's it. The goal is filling up an entire force org chart.

This gets me thinking. I don't use any fast attack slots in any of my current lists. This could pose a problem for me. Then I look at the FA options and see that 3 spore mines count as one FA choice. I have 8 mines from Battle for MCragge. That will be two slots painted. Then there are these three ripper swarms that I have. One more slot painted. All Chelsea said was fill in a FoC slot. This is going to be fun. With all this taken in I realized that once I've painted about 1/2 of my normal list I'll get a free battle force. How sweet is that. Here is the list of what I'm painting for the Golden Throne.

HQ
-----
Tyranid Prime
[edit] Hive Tyrant

Elites
-----
Deathleaper
Zoanthrope
[edit] Zoanthrope

Fast Attack
-----
(3) Spore Mines
(3) Spore Mines
[edit] (3) Raveners

Heavy Support
-----
Biovore
Carnifex
Trygon Prime

Troops
-----
(4) Genestealers with Broodlord
(4) Genestealers with Broodlord
(10) Termagants
(3) ripper swarms
(3) warriors
[edit] Tervigon

At this point the only models I don't have are a last FA slot and the Carnifex. I know it's really pushing the lines but hey, a Free battle force is on the line here. How often does that happen? My thought is that I'll likely pick up a box of Gargoyles to fill that last fast attack. All in about 45 days, I think I can do this.

[edit] I decided to go with Raveners for the last fast attack slot. I needed the scything talons and they are easier to put together and paint than Gargoyles. This will put me at 57 models to have done in 45 days. Most of the time will likely be spent putting them together and making the bases. Batch painting will be my friend. [/edit]

Well I'd say wish me luck but this isn't really one of those times..

Until next time.

Tim.

Great Friday

I got in a couple of games at the house yesterday with Thomas. We decided that the chance to sit down, eat snacks, and swill Mt. Dew was worth more than full sized tables and fancy terrain; so we played at my place instead of the local GW store. Thomas brought over his Necrons, Orks, and some Tyranids so that I could borrow bugs instead of always proxying. I'm still trying to figure out what type of list that I want to get good with. The bigger TMC's are the ones that I'm leery of buying when I don't know if they are going to work out. I picked up a Trygon with the GW gift card and then bits ordered a Carnifex and some warriors. I have a few lists that I'm trying out and the games against Thomas are a great chance to test things out in a more stable environment then a standard pick up game at the store.
My concerns are mainly around the Carnifex, Mawloc, and other questionable picks. Some of the TMC's look good on paper and others don't. I've never really been into all of the interwebs hype and TheoryHammer so I like to run things on the field to get a feel for how I do with them.

Our first game was 1500 points with Thomas driving Necrons. We rolled for annihilation and I asked if he would be ok with a different mission. I'm not going to get a good idea if all our games are kill points. We decided to do a Capture and Control mission and then rolled Table Quarters for the deployment. His list was something like:

Nightbringer
Lord - Orb, phase shifter, phylactery
3 x 10 Warriors
5 Pariahs
Monolith

I used a mix of units that I've put in lists from the beginning as well as a couple that I hadn't. The real change was using a Hive Tyrant since I was able to burrow Thomas's. My list was something like this:

Hive Tyrant - Heavy Venom Cannon, Hive Commander, Life Leech, Paroxysm
1 Tyrant Guard
10 Termagants
Tervigon - Catalyst
10 Genestealers - Broodlord, Implant attack
3 warriors - Death Spitters, Barbed Strangler
2 Zoanthropes
Mycetic Spore "Mikey"
Deathleaper
6 Ymgral Genestealers
Trygon Prime

After my last game with Regeneration on the TMC's I figured that I'd try going without it this game. I found that even on the bigger monstrous creatures it really didn't do that much. Playing with the numbers was a little tricky this time since I was using the Tyrant.

I have decided that in these early days where I'm toying around with the different units I really wouldn't put up battle reports. Especially when I'm going to be plowing through a couple of games a day. Instead I'll be putting down my thoughts of how the units worked with each other and how I want to try and use them in the future. I'm not a big fan of doing the whole unit by unit breakdown thing. If you're looking for those there are a multitude of other blogs that can give you that. I'm going to work with the nuts and bolts of how I play each one and how they worked together. Hopefully this will get more refined as I try and build a competitive list for myself and start looking at the tournament scene. My goal is to hopefully have a chance of going to Conquest NW next year and do fairly well. It's not the going that I need to be hopeful for it's the doing well so, We shall see.

In the 1500 point game there were a couple of big lessons. First and foremost, if anyone was wondering, you must Shoot Nightbringer. Since the objective of the game was home base control I started throwing everything that wasn't a troop at the beast. Nightbringer floored a Trygon Prime in one round of combat after it sustained a couple of wounds while slithering up to him. Nightbringer then killed a fresh Tyrant and it's guard in two rounds of combat. He is just too much of a pain with it's wounding on 2's and no Invulnerable save on my TMC's to try and go hand to hand with. Any time I see him on the table he will be shoot and nothing else. I tried to get the Genestealers with Lord to him but since they were the only thing that "death" was afraid of the Stealers were target number one for all Gauss fire. Implant attack would have ruined the Nightbringers day so the stealers weren't much for this world.

Ymgral Stealers would have been cool except for the fact that they showed up one turn before the Monolith and an ordnance blast has a way of making them melt.

This game was another chance for me to try and down the 'lith with the brain bugs. Zoanthropes are becoming more and more a once in a life time kill for me. In the last two games that I've shot at the monolith they have yet to destroy it. Two Zoanthropes are just not strong enough to do it with any precision. It may just be me, I don't know. I just can't get a good shot in with all the rolls required to get there. This doesn't mean that I'll stop fielding them though. They are still the best chance I have against Land Raiders and Monoliths. I'd rather have some chance instead of no chance. They also have the AP3 blast which makes Marines melt. I should learn to stop shooting at the monolith and start melting Necron Warriors instead.

The Tervigon in the game had a chance to make two units of Gants. This was the first time that I'd used it's ability since it wasn't annihilation. I rolled doubles on the second roll but that was still enough wounds on my home objective to ensure that it was pretty safe. I don't think that I'll ever run more than one Tervigon since I don't actually have that many gant models.

Those were the major lessons for the first game. I'll have to make sure that I don't repeat mistakes in the future.

Our second game was 1000 points against Orks. Thomas decided to go for an all foot horde. His list was surely not the most optimum, but gave me a chance to see how the bugs would do against more wounds. I told Thom that I needed to try and figure out how to use Deathleaper the right way. All the games so far have not been great as he was concerned. Thom wanted to do something a little different so he let me take Leaper for free and he took a unit of Lobbas for free. The idea was to see how it would work for the "attack the back" maneuver. Funny thing Leaper didn't come in till turn four. Oh well.

Thomas played a list like this:

Warboss - Cybork body
5 Mega Nobz
2 x 30 shoota boyz
30 Ard Boyz

4 Lobbas with a bunch of Grots (free)

For my list I wanted to try and get away from some of the units that I had been playing and move on to something a little different, but not too much. Instead of the Tervigon and Gants I took this list:

Tyranid Prime - Lash whip/Bone Sword, Death Spitter, Regeneration
4 Warriors - Death Spitters, Barbed Strangler
2 x 10 Genestealers - Brood Lord, Implant attack
2 Zoanthropes
Mikey
Carnifex - Bioplasma

Deathleaper (free)

This mission was Seize ground and Dawn of war deployment. I put the Prime and warriors on the table and infiltrated a unit of Stealers. The other unit was Outflanking and everything else was normal. Thomas started with the Boss and Manz and a unit of shoota boyz. I let him take first turn.

The biggest lesson from this game is that the Broodlord with implant will ALWAYS be in my stealer units. The next big lesson was that if I get the charge on a 30 shoota boy unit I will crush them, if 30 Ard Boyz get the charge on my stealers there is no hope for the stealers.

The infiltrating unit of stealers set up the assault on a mob of shotta boyz and in two turns the Orks were gone. The same unit then assaulted the Boss and Manz in the next turn and implant attacked the warboss. By the end of the phase the manz were dead and the only one left was the Broodlord. They totally made their points back, if that was how I was counting it.

All in all it was pretty cool day. Played some good games, got some substitute bugs, and had a bunch of laughs.

Until Next time.

Tim.

P.S. We started off with a couple of games of Space Hulk then after lunch we moved to a 1500 point game of 40K. I wasn't really ready to move up to this level using only the models that I had, but the great store manager and staff let me use the Mawloc from the cabnet and the Warpstone winner let me use his winner as well. Armed with both of these and a few proxies I had a great swing into a full list.
I wanted to really buckle down and try to ignore a lot of the web hype and play the amry that feels right to me. As I get on with this army I'll see about changing and such. For now though, I want to keep the core with what I have on hand. Here is the list I used:

Tyranid Prime: Bone Sword, Lash whip, Deathspitter
Tervigon: Adrenal Glands, Toxic Sacs, Regeneration, Catalyst
10 Termagants
2x 10 genestealers: Broodlord
2 Zoanthropes: Mycetic Spore: Vennom Cannon
Deathleaper
8 Ymgral Genesteaers
Trygon Prime
Mawloc: Regeneration

My opponent was a middle of the road Necron army. He had:

Lord: Orb
2x 10 warriors
3 Heavy Destroyers
3 Destroyers
3 Wraiths
10 Immotals
Monolith

The Mission was kill points and the depolyment was table halves. I'll get a full battle report up later but I'll throw some inital feelings in here. To start off with I beat the Crons, but this wasn't a super serious competative game. We have played a number of times against each other and it's always more about hanging out then beating each others faces in. I like these games for a couple reasons. First, it's nice to see lists that aren't super tweaked. It helps to get a broader sense of how your amry does in an "all comers" sort of way. Second, it allows me to feild something a little less than cutting edge to get an idea of how it meshes with the rest of the army. Ymgral Stealers are the perfect example. I've yet to see any lists that don't use this unit as a goof off pick. Personally I want to try and find the niche that they fill and fill it. I see them more about the psychological factor of the unit and less about the over all "getting points back".

Looking at the units that I choose I like the surprises that the new tyranids bring to the table. I want to take that feeling of surprise and run it to task. Biggest let down in the list for me was Regeneration. I know statistically I'm supposed to get back wounds etc, etc. I can say by turn four I just stopped rolling for it. The Tervigon was no longer the threat and wasn't being shot at and the Mawloc was playing Marco Pollo. It just didn't feel like it was worth the investment in this setting. Disappointment #2 was surely the Mawloc. With both it and a Trygon Prime there was really no comparison. The Prime is really the Cream that rose to the top. Of course it is more points for the prime than the Mawloc, but all you're really getting for your 190 odd points of Mawloc is around 3 AP2 large blasts. Not really what I'm looking for. This will likely be the first and last time I field one. This does beg the question about the choice of what I want to put in it's place, which is a Podding Screamer Killer. The Screamer Killer easily weights in with the pod at the same price as a Trygon. I will have to get them on the table and really run the courses to see which ends up staying.

Well I'll leave it at that for now. Hopefully this is just the begining for my project.

Tim.

First post of course

[edit] In an effort to make my posting here more feature rich and entertaining I'm going to include a tag called edits. This will be information that I go back and update posts with. In each post that I edit I'll put in an "edit" tag to show where I've edited. This way I don't have posts that are out of context. It also gives everyone a reason to go back to older posts. Like a trasure hunt. I'm not sure how I'll like it but, Meh.

By the way. I know the colors that I've chosen for the page are a little "girly" but once everyone has a chance to see the splinter fleet they'll understand why I chose the colors I did.
